Bassist Jerry Jemmott was the special guest on their previous album, but here it is the veteran jazz saxophonist Bill Easley, who plays on selected cuts with his usual professional verve, panache, and solid, fluid lines. Guitarist Grant Green, Jr. is coming into his own as heard more clearly, while organist Reuben Wilson and drummer Bernard Purdie continue to stake their estimable reputations on the chitlin circuit music they grew up with. When the band chooses to swing, as on the basic 12-bar groove “My Blues” with its fleet organ solo amidst Purdie’s shuffle beat, or the straight-ahead, uncomplicated, and simple “Down Hill” with Easley’s deft tenor leading the way, there’s little stopping them. A very, very, very slow take of “Stella by Starlight” gives Green Jr. an opportunity to emulate his famous father’s unmistakable snappy technique, pulled off the bone and well done. His singing, a bit gritty, crops up on versions of “Light My Fire” and “What’s Going On,” admirable but not a strong suit. Where Wilson shines is his ability to either shred solos and melodies, as on the head-nodding groove of the delightfully rendered “The Funkster” or on the solid-sending feed he provides during “Groove On” above Green’s overdubbed guitar parts. Of course, there is no more readily identifiable drummer than Purdie when he shakes and bakes the clockwork rhythms of “Monkey Milk,” in an Average White Band “Pick Up the Pieces” mode, or adds his personal and widely copied light contemporary funk to a modified version of “Autumn Leaves.” Purdie also proves he can swing with the best of jazz drummers, an aspect of his personality and career not always given due credit. Analog CMOS Filters for Very High Frequencies $146.11 Integrated circuit technology is widely used for the full integration of electronic systems. In general, these systems are realized using digital techniques implemented in CMOS technology. The low power dissipation, high packing density, high noise immunity, ease of design and the relative ease of scaling are the driving forces of CMOS technology for digital applications. Parts of these systems cannot be implemented in the digital domain and will remain analog. In order to achieve complete system integration these analog functions are preferably integrated in the same CMOS technology. An important class of analog circuits that need to be integrated in CMOS are analog filters. This book deals with very high frequency (VHF) filters, which are filters with cut-off frequencies ranging from the low megahertz range to several hundreds of megahertz. Until recently the maximal cut-off frequencies of CMOS filters were limited to the low megahertz range. By applying the techniques presented in this book the limit could be pushed into the true VHF domain, and integrated VHF filters become feasible. Application of these VHF filters can be found in the field of communication, instrumentation and control systems. For example, pre and post filtering for high-speed AD and DA converters, signal reconstruction, signal decoding, etc. The general design philosophy used in this book is to allow only the absolute minimum of signal carrying nodes throughout the whole filter. This strategy starts at the filter synthesis level and is extended to the level of electronic circuitry. The result is a filter realization in which all capacitators (including parasitics) have a desired function. The advantage of this technique is that high frequency parasitic effects (parasitic poles/zeros) are minimally present. Brooklands: Cradle of British Motor Racing and Aviation $6.38 Brooklands, near Weybridge in Surrey, holds a unique and highly important place in the histories of both motoring and aviation. The first flight of a British pilot in a British aircraft took place there in 1908, and Britain’s first flying school was opened within the circuit in 1910. Several manufacturers began aircraft production at Brooklands, and the most important of these, Vickers, took over large parts of the site when motor racing stopped in 1939. Many aircraft, including the Wellington bomber, were built here in large numbers during the war.When peace returned in 1945 the race track at Brooklands was in poor condition and built over in places. Racing never resumed, but the aviation history of the site grew ever stronger, with design and production of airliners including the VC-10 and Concorde. Today Brooklands is home to a thriving museum and, as the years pass, more and more of the old track is being restored to its former glory.
