First, we present a novel algorithm which performs surface reconstruction from planar arrays of cameras and generates dense depth maps with multiple values per pixel. Second, we introduce a novel codec for the static depth-image-based representation, which jointly estimates and encodes the unknown depth map from multiple views using a novel rate-distortion optimization scheme. Third, we propose a second novel codec for the static depth-image-based representation, which relies on a shape-adaptive wavelet transform and an explicit representation of the locations of major depth edges to achieve major rate-distortion gains. Finally, we propose a novel algorithm to extract the side information in the context of distributed video coding of 3D scenes. |

4H-silicon carbide detectors for low level ultraviolet detection. $49.99 Ultraviolet radiation covers the wavelength from 400nm down to 10nm. The superior material properties of 4H-SiC make visible-blind, ultra sensitive and low noise UV photodetectors possible.;The major objective of this Ph.D. thesis research is to design and fabricate high performance 4H-SiC photodetectors for low-level UV detection. Schottky photodiodes, avalanche PIN photodiodes and avalanche phototransistors are studied for various applications.;In this study, the first 4H-SiC Schottky photodiode that can fully cover EUV to NUV range has been successfully fabricated. Ultralow leakage current, high quantum efficiency and high UV-to-visible rejection ratio have been achieved. The first 1×16 4H-SiC Schottky photodiode array with very large detection area has been successfully fabricated and characterized. A novel UV spectrographic system using the 4H-SiC Schottky photodiode array is demonstrated with a fine spectrum resolution.;4H-SiC single photon avalanche photodiode (SPAD) is studied for UV single photon detection. In this work, many challenging issues including bevel edge termination and ohmic contact have been addressed. The 4H-SiC SPADs show high gain, low dark count rate and good single photon detection efficiency (SPDE). The best 4H-SiC SPAD shows a high counting efficiency of 79% and 32.5% with a dark count rate of 125.3 kHz and 38.8 kHz at -119.4 V and -119 V, respectively. The first 4H-SiC SPAD array has been successfully fabricated and characterized. Only 1 pixel out of 33 pixels shows high leakage and high dark count rate. For all the good pixels working at -119.5V, the gain is greater than 10 6, the dark count rate is less than 100 kHz and the SPDE is more than 2%. Achieving complex global objectives via simple local rules: Applications in networking and medical imaging. $49.99 Local algorithms are highly desirable for network operations. They distribute the communication and computation loads to the individual nodes. In this thesis, we are interested in problems with highly complex objectives, often NP-hard in the worst case, and in designing approximate local algorithms that not only distribute the load, but also reduce the overall complexity. In particular, we design message passing algorithms for problems in networking and medical imaging. The first application concerns data measurement in networks. Networks collect detailed statistics on the data sent by each node. This requires large and fast memories for housing the counters. However, such memories are prohibitively expensive. We introduce a novel architecture, called Counter Braids, which allows counters to be shared among the flows. We show that with a high-complexity decoder, Counter Braids is asymptotically optimal. For practical purposes, we propose a simple, local message passing algorithm that recovers all flow sizes exactly. The analysis of the algorithm yields an interesting comparison with the reconstruction method employed by compressed sensing. We also consider the flow label collection problem and prototype Counter Braids on NetFPGA. The second application concerns the separation of water and fat signals in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A key step in this problem is the estimation of the field inhomogeneity map across the whole image from pixel-level observations. We present an algorithm, called JIGSAW, which estimates the field map by spreading pixel-level information via simple local exchanges. It outperforms existing techniques to produce uniform water-fat separation in several challenging and clinically important imaging scenarios. |

An evaluation of a UAV guidance system with consumer grade GPS receivers. $49.99 Remote sensing has been demonstrated an important tool in agricultural and natural resource management and research applications, however there are limitations that exist with traditional platforms (i.e., hand held sensors, linear moves, vehicle mounted, airplanes, remotely piloted vehicles (RPVs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and satellites). Rapid technological advances in electronics, computers, software applications, and the aerospace industry have dramatically reduced the cost and increased the availability of remote sensing technologies.;Remote sensing imagery vary in spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions and are available from numerous providers. Appendix A presented results of a test project that acquired high-resolution aerial photography with a RPV to map the boundary of a 0.42 km2 fire area. The project mapped the boundaries of the fire area from a mosaic of the aerial images collected and compared this with ground-based measurements. The project achieved a 92.4% correlation between the aerial assessment and the ground truth data.;Appendix B used multi-objective analysis to quantitatively assess the tradeoffs between different sensor platform attributes to identify the best overall technology. Experts were surveyed to identify the best overall technology at three different pixel sizes.;Appendix C evaluated the positional accuracy of a relatively low cost UAV designed for high resolution remote sensing of small areas in order to determine the positional accuracy of sensor readings. The study evaluated the accuracy and uncertainty of a UAV flight route with respect to the programmed waypoints and of the UAV’s GPS position, respectively.
