What can happen if you cross the jumper cables?

So i went to jump my car i had left the lights on and someone had a 02 altima and they crossed the jumper cables and big sparks came out and they pulled it all off turned the altima off then onit started back up but the service egine light is on whats your opinoin ima take a code reader but eberything still works the batt is still good do you think it could just be a fuse

Disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes then hook back up it should resete the check engine light to where it is off. From there see if it comes back on if it does hook the code reader up and see whats wrong other wise it should be ok.
